Peggy Tuttle, GSI Director, brings donated medicine and supplies to the XP children in their dirt floor shacks located in a remote village. She is working with the Genetics Institute of Central America Laboratory on a project to identify the XP carriers in this village with the goal of eliminating XP from this region.

What is XP?

Xeroderma Pigmentosum is a rare genetic disorder whereby a patient’s DNA lacks the ability to repair damage from ultraviolet sunlight. The disorder leads to skin cancer and blindness in early childhood. Unless, these patients receive medical care and protection from sun exposure, the XP victims die at an early age from malignant carcinoma.
