There is no cure for XP, our only hope is prevention. The most important aspect of prevention is to first identify the XP carriers in the village. Out of 160 people so far tested by Invegem, the genetic laboratory, 60 are carriers. There are hundreds more to be tested. Children are born with XP only when two carriers marry. Therefore, XP could be illuminated from the village if we could prevent carriers from marrying each other, so education is a key. However, it is more challenging than one would think within this culture.
Surgery for XP Children
XP children try to hide from the sun under the blankets, as they await their surgeries from the Faith in Practice Medical Team. GSI networks with many U.S. visiting doctors and local Guatemalan doctors to maintain the health care of these children in their fight against cancer. Their village is 13 hours in a 4 wheel drive vehicle to this hospital in Huehuetenango. Your partnership makes it possible for us to continue to provide life saving surgeries and medical care for these XP children.

The Dream - One Story of Many!
April 2013, the children piled into the back of the large van, their faces cover with a shroud to protect them from the hot noon day sun. GSI transported ten XP children and nine parents 8 hours down a long rugged dirt road from their village to the Hospital Especialidades in Huehuetenango. Another XP child traveled with his mother on a bus all the way from Honduras to join us.
Children, little children, with the most deformed faces you could ever imagine. Some of their faces were so ravaged by cancer that they were unrecognizable as humans. The stench was so foul you could hardly be in the same room. It’s hard to tell the true story. The unbearable groans and painful night cries. It was more than one could bear. I thought, “Is this a horrible dream?” “How can this be real in this day and age?” Unbelievable suffering in front of me as I looked upon one child, Juanito, who’s cancer devoured his nose, cheek bones, and eye, all the way to the brain. His face was literally gone. Oh my God help us! I cannot bear to see them suffering so. No pain meds, no help, no money, no one who cares. Please, dear Lord. rescue these children. Juanito laid on his death bed, it was too late for him. God's love surrounded him as this little child gave his heart to Jesus. Yet now, more babies are being born with this deadly genetic disease, we need a miracle breakthrough. Then, I remembered Jesus said, “Let the little children come unto me, forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of God.” There remains a hope and a dream that cannot be quenched! That dream is, "One day there will not be another child born with XP in this village!" We will fight, we will win, we will pray, we will educate, we will test, we will work, we will toil, we will by the grace of God totally defeat this destroyer of life. Standing together to see the victory!
